Marine Bottom Paint
HOW DO I PAINT THE BOTTOM OF MY BOAT?
The answer to this question is to use a marine bottom paint that will make maintenance and upkeep on your boat much easier. There are several different types of paints that you can use to paint your boat bottom and we will try to help you choose the right one. Antifouling paints are used on boat bottoms because they reduce or eliminate any marine growth that develops on your boat's underwater surfaces. Antifouling paints do this by using biocides that slowly release during the season to repel underwater aquatic life.

MARINE BOTTOM PAINT CATEGORIES
- ABLATIVE COPOLYMER ANTIFOULINGS - ideal for customers who need to haul and relaunch without repainting over multiple seasons.
- HARD ANTIFOULINGS - ideal for fast powerboats, racing sailboats or boats where the owners have the bottoms scrubbed regularly
- CAMOUFLAGE PAINT - for hunting and fishing boats
- UNDERWATER METAL PAINT - for underwater components such as propellers, rudders, shafts, bow thrusters and trim tabs
- FRESH WATER BOAT PAINT - paint for boats moored in fresh water and trailered boats
- ALUMINUM BOAT PAINT - paint for aluminum boats that do not contain copper
CHOICE 1: ABLATIVE COPOLYMER ANTIFOULINGS - ideal for customers who need to haul and relaunch without repainting over multiple seasons.
- These ablative antifoulings will give your boat, sailboat or powerboat multi-season protection from marine life buildup and will decrease the regular maintenance of your boat.
- These antifoulings are partially soluble and will wear down very similiar to the way a bar of soap would wear away. Increasing the number of coats of paint will also increase the longevity of the paint. The friction of the water passing over the boat surface steadily reduces the thickness of the paint at a controlled rate, which results in always having fresh biocide at the surface of the paint throughout the season.
- The paints should be used in high fouling areas. The higher the copper content of the paint, the more effective it will be in higher fouling conditions.
- Boats painted with the Copper Pro and Copper Shield series paints can be hauled and relaunched without repainting since the biocides are chemically bound to the paint film and are only active when in the water.

CHOICE 2: HARD ANTIFOULINGS - ideal for fast powerboats, racing sailboats or boats where the owners have the bottoms scrubbed regularly
- Hard Epoxy antifouling paints are packed with biocides which are designed to "leach" out on contact with water to prevent fouling growth. This leaching process releases the biocides throughout the season, but the amount will steadily decrease until there is not enough biocide coming out of the paint film to maintain fouling protection. Once the biocide is exhausted, the hard paint film remains on the boat.
- Hard antifoulings do not retain their antifouling ability out of the water and CANNOT be hauled and relaunched without repainting. One of the main benefits of this type of antifouling is its resistance to abrasion and rubbing. This makes it ideal for fast powerboats, racing sailboats or boats where the owners have the bottoms scrubbed regularly. Most hard antifouling paints can be wet sanded and burnished prior to launch to reduce drag and improve hull speed.
